Mouth-Body Connection

There’s no question that a strong connection between poor oral health and a number of serious medical issues throughout the body exists. In fact, numerous scientific studies show that gum disease has a direct correlation to heart disease, diabetes, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Additional conditions that have been linked to suboptimal oral wellness include sleep apnea, high blood pressure, arthritis, depression, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, kidney failure, cancer, and more.

Not only is our practice focused on the beauty and health of your smile, we are also concerned about your overall wellness. Taking the entire body into consideration, we offer a wide range of exceptional services that always involve a thorough review of medical history and extensive head and neck exam to determine if certain conditions in the mouth are correlated with underlying medical and health concerns—or vice versa.

A particularly unique offering we provide is OralDNA® Labs—a salivary lab test that can not only identify specific pathogenic bacteria that negatively affect gum tissue, but also reveal genetic and inflammatory markers that may indicate current or potential future health issues in other parts of the body. These include, but are not limited to, heart disease, some cancers, joint and musculoskeletal dysfunction, and dementia. By accurately pinpointing which bacteria are present in a patient’s mouth, Dr. Tsangaroulis can develop and perform treatment that is customized and specific to each individual, as well as share insights with their other healthcare providers when requested. In fact, many physicians in our area contact us to request OralDNA® Labs reports for their patients due to the systemic relationship between oral health and full-body wellness.

Ultimately, by focusing on the mouth-body connection, Dr. Tsangaroulis and our team provide a service that goes beyond oral care, helping to improve your overall well-being.

Family Dentistry

As a family man himself, Dr. Tsangaroulis is passionate about offering dental services to both you and your loved ones. From creating an optimal foundation for dental wellness during childhood to maintaining beautiful, healthy teeth and gums throughout all of life’s stages, our team is dedicated to ensuring your family receives the oral care it needs and deserves in a safe, comfortable, trusted environment. We also place a strong emphasis on education, helping patients of all ages develop a complete understanding of good dental habits that can result in bright, healthy smiles that last a lifetime.

After a bad experience I quit the dentist for 6 years. Dr. Tsangaroulis is the only person I’ve been able to trust. And now I trust him with my whole family. From the moment we are greeted at the front desk to checkout, we are completely at ease. Dr. T is very comprehensive. I feel like no issue goes unnoticed. He’s a bit of a perfectionist, but it’s appreciated since this is my smile! My four year old has been going since he was two. We are a family of winning smiles thanks to Dr. T.

Oral Exams

A comprehensive oral exam enables our team to thoroughly assess the health and condition of your teeth and gums, identifying any possible concerns to allow for prompt treatment, if necessary. In addition to a visual evaluation by Dr. Tsangaroulis and our team, an oral examination may include a dental cleaning, digital x-rays, CariVu™ cavity detection, intraoral imaging, and/or oral cancer screening to ensure nothing goes undetected. To learn more about these specific services, please visit the section of our website that details our advanced dental technology.

Dental Cleanings

Routine dental cleanings are imperative to maintaining oral wellness. While daily brushing and flossing helps to keep the teeth and gums clean, not all plaque, tartar, and bacteria can be removed through at-home hygiene care. Professional cleanings from our team get rid of the plaque, tartar, and bacteria left behind, significantly reducing the potential for decay and various other issues. Dr. Tsangaroulis recommends most patients receive two dental cleanings per year, though the exact number will depend on your unique oral needs and history.

To optimize both comfort and sanitation during dental cleanings, we utilize Kulzer’s Ivory® ReLeaf™—an innovative suction device that allows patients to control the buildup and removal of water and fluids themselves throughout treatment, as well as helps prevent unsanitary aerosols from escaping the mouth and being released into the air. Shaped like an actual leaf, the Ivory® ReLeaf™ mouthpiece is soft, latex- and BPA-free, and allows for effortless mouth movement and communication while in place.

Fillings

Dental fillings are used to restore integrity and function to teeth harmed by cavities and/or cracks. Dr. Tsangaroulis uses BPA-free composite resin materials for fillings, which are very durable and pose no health risks to patients.

In the event previously placed silver amalgam fillings—which contain mercury—need to be replaced, Dr. Tsangaroulis employs the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART). Developed by the International Academy of Oral Medicine & Toxicology, SMART involves the utilization of numerous scientifically backed protocols intended to supplement traditional safe amalgam removal techniques, thereby further limiting mercury absorption and increasing overall patient safety during the filling removal process. At our practice, these protocols include—but are not limited to—placing a rubber dam to isolate teeth and prevent mercury particles from contacting surrounding oral tissues, using a mercury vapor ionizer and air filtration to protect against harmful mercury vapors released, and ensuring patients and all staff members present are fully equipped with highly protective garments and coverings.

Ultimately, by using BPA-free composite resin for new fillings and employing SMART protocols when removing old amalgam fillings, Dr. Tsangaroulis can maximize the safety of dental filling treatments while promoting optimal oral and full-body wellness.

High-Tech Oral Cancer Screenings

Oral cancer is a life-threatening condition that doesn’t typically display symptoms in its earliest stages, making it vitally important to receive regular screenings to identify any tissue abnormalities as soon as possible. At our practice, Dr. Tsangaroulis utilizes state-of-the-art VELscope® technology for oral cancer screening, which is a non-invasive system that emits a safe blue light into the mouth. While healthy tissues reflect this light (causing them to glow), any abnormal tissue will absorb the light and appear dark. This allows Dr. Tsangaroulis to identify potential issues before they are visible to the naked eye, leading to a less invasive approach that can be highly effective in treating oral cancer.

Periodontal Care

Periodontal (gum) disease is caused by the accumulation of plaque and bacteria around the teeth and underneath the gumline. If left untreated and allowed to worsen, gum disease progresses from tissue sensitivities and inflammation to the creation of deep pockets that cause the gums to actually separate from the teeth. This stage of periodontal disease can eventually lead to tooth loss, as well as an increased risk for heart disease, stroke, and various other medical issues.

Dr. Tsangaroulis and our team offer several treatment options for gum disease, including non-invasive therapy, dental lasers, and unique oral probiotic lozenges containing specific strains that are antimicrobial and support gum and tooth health by crowding out bad bacteria. As added benefits, they help to naturally whiten teeth and freshen breath—and they are 100 percent natural and safe for children.

We also use OralDNA® Labs for DNA genetic testing for those who may be predisposed to periodontitis, as well as to identify and target an individual’s specific bacteria causing the disease. This is especially beneficial because it enables Dr. Tsangaroulis to custom-develop a treatment plan based on the exact pathogenic bacteria responsible for one’s periodontal issues—resulting in more effective gum care and a diminished risk for numerous other oral bacterial-related conditions, including cardiovascular disease, pregnancy complications, strokes, diabetes, and more.
